MobileMRS is software to run on handhelds to help collect data and eventually host medical record forms. The code will be open source and in Java, which seems the best bet to make it run on a range of inexpensive devices. They are emphasizing the design of the system and having an extensible architecture. It will be designed to work very well with the open source EMR OpenMRS, but also to be usable without it. Currently, there are four groups contributing code to this effort.

Mobile X-forms Consortium

Mobile X-forms Consortium: realizing that there are in fact a variety of groups working in very similar direction to MobileMRS, we are trying to form a consortium to share knowledge and agree on standards by which they can all operate. We expect to specify the data collection and health form instruments in X-forms. The idea is that other groups programming in non-Java languages and we can all agree on the basic inputs and outputs so that we can use each other’s mobile applications interchangeably. This is brand new effort, but many Open Source groups have signed on to it.
