Introduction

In past several years, Electronic Health Records / Medical Health Records have gained a lot of attention in health care industries, state and national government in order to have more transparent and accurate report on the health records and try to improve the quality of care, control costs, and eliminating or reducing mistakes in patient care.

Chiropractic Medicine is no exception when it comes to these areas. The aim of this article is to show how the SCP (Society-Culture-Personality) model might be used as a tool by Chiropractic physician along with EMR to improve the doctor-patient interaction, enhanced model of communication, and finally roles of a Chiropractic physicians and new patient.

Objectives

The objective is to demonstrate how the SCP model and EMR might help Chiropractors in treatment, diagnosis, and prognosis of their patients in urban and rural areas.

Discussion

In order to better understand a patient, the treating physicians need to obtain information about patient SCP. Studies have shown that the literacy level of patient (computer usage and access to WWW, and knowledge of healthcare) plays an important role in doctor-patient communication, and hence knowing more about patient and their socio/cultural status of patient can improve the communication during encounter, such as usage of medical terminologies and understanding of the illness.

Using CPOD during visit is critical for future usage of the EMR. The caveat here is that sometimes using of COPE can become a barrier in doctor-patient interaction. In order to improve the doctor-patient relationship, the patient should be considered as a member of the society who is a person, a family member, a father, etc., and not merely considered as an isolated ill person, therefore it is important to note the patient role in the society as well.

Conclusions

This articles examined and showed that how the proper usage of EMR along with SCP model can improve the doctor-patient relationship and their communication. It also emphasized on how usage of EMR can improve the quality of care and its delivery. It also showed that accurate data entry can indeed help the Chiropractors to better understand their patients. SCP model can play an important role in doctor-patient communication.

Comments

Chiropractors need to understand the role of EMR in their practice. It is inevitable that EMR and its usage is on the rise, and they should be aware of how these technology can change the method of practice, therefore learning and obtain the necessary knowledge in that field is essential.
