Clinicians satisfaction with CPOE ease of use and effect on clinicians' workflow, efficiency and medication safety.

Background

This study was conducted at the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The purpose of this study was to determine the satisfaction of the ‘Medicator’ CPOE system use for clinicians as well as the effect of it on their workflow, efficiency, and medication safety. [1]

Methods

Two survey questionnaires distributed to (CPOE) users. One for the nurses and one for the physicians.

Results

The response rate for the questionnaires: 106 physicians and 327 nurses returned the surveys. Overall, physicians were satisfied with the CPOE use, efficiency, and medication safety. Nurses were also satisfied with CPOE use, efficiency and medication safety. The older nurses were more positive about the CPOE usability verses the younger nurses.

Conclusions

The physicians and nurses felt that additional functions to the CPOE system were needed such as alerts for patient allergies.

Comments

Overall this study revealed that the clinicians were satisfied with their CPOE system. They were satisfied with the easy of use, effect on efficiency, workflow and medication safety.
