Health Information Systems Project (HISP) District Health Information Software – Version 2 (DHIS 2) is an open-source that is used for health management information system-collection, validation, analysis and visualization of aggregate data. DHIS 2 runs on any platform with Java Runtime Environment 6 or higher installed. As of 2012, there are 30 countries where DHIS 2 software is currently being adopted. Seven of these countries (Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda and Uganda) adopted DHIS 2 as their nation-wide health information system. It worth noting that this system is primarily used for public health programs in developing countries and which can collect, manage and analyze individual data at the facility level and reported through the national reporting chain to the national government for aggregation used for program monitoring and reporting among others. It allows for mobile systems integration that allow clinicians, researchers and other stakeholders register cases, events and sometime personal information, and/or track individuals, conduct surveys and capture aggregate data. DHIS 2 can be installed on standalone systems or can be installed on servers for cloud access. It can be internalized, scalable, interoperate with other systems [1]

History

DHIS 2 originally started as a result of political change in South Africa. This change made it possible for a synergetic collaboration between public health activists from the anti-apartheid struggle and information system developer in Norway in the late 1990’s [2]
