It was founded in 1999 by Jeffrey Buchbinder in Connecticut, United States. FreeMED Software Foundation is a non-profit corporation. [2]

The sole purpose of an EMR is to access patient data more easily. FreeMED allows physicians to group medical content by specialty. This grouping enables the physician to view medical content relevant to his/her practice. [3]
