Healthcare Information Technology Standards Panel (HITSP)
Formation
HITSP was formed October 6, 2005, through a grant awarded by the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC)
Administration
HITSP is administered by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The HITSP Secretariat is located in the ANSI office in New York City. The current President is Dr. John Halamka, MD, CIO of Harvard Medical School. They work in cooperation with Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) and Booz Allen Hamilton. Their website includes a Document Library and Listserv Archive. All meetings of the Full Panel are located in the Washington, DC, area and their proceedings are publicly accessible by teleconference.
Membership
Membership on the Panel is open to four types of groups: standards development organizations (SDOs) (5%), non-SDO stakeholder organizations (80%), government bodies (8%) and consumer organizations (4%). Non-SDO stakeholder organizations include HIT vendors, professional societies, healthcare provider organizations, healthcare payers, and clinical researcher organizations.
Mission
“Achieve a widely accepted and useful set of standards that will enable and support widespread interoperability among healthcare software applications.”
Interoperability Specifications (IS)
HITSP is working on Specifications in the following areas: EHR Laboratory Results Reporting, Biosurveillance, Consumer Empowerment, Emergency Responder EHR, Quality, Medication Management, Personalized Healthcare, Consultations & Transfers of Care, Immunizations, Public Health Case Reporting, Patient-Provider Secure Messaging, and Remote Monitoring.
