Hospital OS "is a research and development project for a Hospital Management Software to support small rural hospitals in Thailand" [1]. With funding from the Thailand Research Fund, it is a grass root effort by healthcare and software professionals to provide accessible information system for rural hospitals in Thailand for basic health care and accounting management. The goal of Hospital OS is to:

  • improve productivity [2]
  • reduce the risk to the patient [3]

It is a open source platform that can save lives. The project is definitely not for novice users. They have feature on their called E-prescription which the doctor types in prescription using the application which reduces time and errors.

History

In 2001-2002, a group of IT and medical professionals, lead by Dr. Kongkiat Kespechara, submitted a proposal to the Thailand Research Fund to fund Hospital OS for 17 month of development [4]. It has already been implemented in more than 95 rural hospitals, 250+ clinics and health stations in Thailand. They have received requests from more than 40 countries around the world such as India, U.S., Phillipines, Botswana, Brazil, Nigeria, etc. and are planning to expand their operations [5].
