Micro MD was created by Henry Schein, a Fortune 500 company and the largest provider in healthcare products and services to office based dental, animal health and medical practitioners. MicroMD is a software system to assist medical practices of all sizes to utilize electronic records. MicroMD is practical in all sizes of practices, from small 1-3 provider facilities, to large 100+ provider facilities. They are able to customize the programs needed for specific groups based on the company's needs as well as provide support throughout roll-out of the systems and while utilizing the programs. History of Henry Schien, Inc.

Henry Schien was a pharmacist from New York in the 1930s. He and his wife initially opened a store in the Queens neighborhood of New York. Following his successful management and advancement in his business, he transitioned to providing for other business and not only individual customers in the 1950s. With continued success, the company staged progressive focus from human dentistry to all dentistry (including veterinary dentistry). In the 1990s the company began to expand internationally while at the same time leading the dental industry with electronic software programs. They also began acquiring other non-dental companies, and began to be publically traded. Today they are one of the leaders in medical technology and have won various awards, including "rank[ing] first in its industry on the FORTUNE® World's Most Admired Companies list"multiple times and "in FORTUNE® 500 Ranking of America's Largest Companies"

Products and Services

MicroMD provides 3 different products, MicroMD PM, MicroMD EMR, and MicroMD DMS These 3 systems are all compatible with each other to create a more simplified work enivornment. In addition, these products are interoperable with partner companies (below is a list of some partners) for the most up-to-date and accurate results and information. The adaptability of these systems allows the user or company to adjust the system to better suit their needs. Depending on the situations the user can input information different formats (form entry, free-text entry, SOAP format)

MicroMD PM- a software system that supports the management of medical organizations. MicroMD PM works on the administrative side of the organizations. It has many features that include scheduling, billing, and reporting. It assists providers in filling claims with insurance companies, as well as creating reports of the patient's as well as reports to insure compliance with regulations. Thousands of physicians across the county utilize this system with exceptional results.

MicroMD EMR- a software system for electronic medical records. This EMR was advertised to expedite care, enhance accuracy and improve reimbursement. This EMR is offered as both web based ASP software and client-server. The features included in this system allow a provider to transition to a paperless, or mostly paperless environment while ensuring accurate transcription, diagnosis, prescribing, and communication with the patient. This EMR program is also effective with businesses moving from the ICD-9 coding to the ICD-10 coding.

Transitioning from ICD-9 to ICD-10

MicroMD is a very effective system to assist any healthcare group or company to move to the use of the new and government-mandated ICD-10 codes. The use of these codes is required to be in place by October 1, 2015. The ICD-10 codes allow for the providers to be more specific when filing claims as compared to the ICD-9 codes, which have been in place for more than 4 decades. MicroMD's EHR programs allow for a seamless and smooth transition by assisting the provider in choosing the new code thru a variety of ways. One way is when being promoted to select the codes, the provider is able to view both the ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes side by side to ensure compatability with the true medical diagnosis. By doing this, MicroMD facilitates the provider to chose the most accurate codes. Another way that MicroMD provides assistance is through direct training either through one on one training sessions or electronic checklists. These opportunities along with various other electronic tools and aid devices allows the provider to transition with relative ease to the new ICCD-10 codes.

Incentives for Transitioning to MicroMD Products

In 2009 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) allocated billions of dollars for healthcare IT initiatives in technology through the HITECH Act. Of this money, $18 billion is intended to motivate physicians and companies to transition to electronic records of "meaningful use." Micro MD EHR has been certified by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) in both stage 1 and stage 2 Meaningful Use.
