NANDA-I Taxonomy (NANDA-I) is an international standardized nursing terminology created by NANDA to define, standardize, classify and define the science of nursing diagnosis and intervention.

Introduction

The NANDA-I terminology is a copyrighted terminology and requires permission of the publisher to reproduce. The terminology was born in 1982 and includes multiple languages and is maintained by a professional nurse organization frequently referred to as NANDA.

NANDA’s mission is to “facilitate the development, refinement, dissemination and use of standardized nursing diagnostic terminology.” [1] In 2020 the professional organization was renamed from North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) to NANDA International (and NANDA International, Inc. in 2011). Membership to the organization is paid and has various tiers of cost based on credentials and implication of use. “The NANDA-I taxonomy currently includes 234 nursing diagnoses that are grouped (classified) within 13 domains (categories) of nursing practice: Health Promotion; Nutrition; Elimination and Exchange; Activity/Rest; Perception/Cognition; Self-Perception; Role Relationships; Sexuality; Coping/Stress Tolerance; Life Principles; Safety/Protection; Comfort; Growth/Development”. [2]

Nursing diagnoses by definition as the foundation for the selection of interventions to achieve health outcomes for patients as performed by nurses. NANDA produces a peer-reviewed journal called, International Journal of Nursing Knowledge. The goals of the journal include improving patient safety by disseminating and clarifying the knowledge base of nursing to ensure global consistency. The International Journal of Nursing Knowledge, is indexed by MEDLINE and CINAHL.
