Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) is an initiative formed in 2004 by nurse stakeholders. The TIGER initiative seeks to develop a shared vision, strategies and actions for using health information technology, with the goal to provide safer, higher quality patient care. [1] The initiative seeks to better prepare practicing nurses and nursing students to use technology and informatics to enhance the delivery of patient care. [2]

In 2006, over 100 key nursing stakeholders from across the U.S. gathered at the TIGER summit to create Phase I of the TIGER initiative. They came together to develop and commit to action steps for realizing the nation’s 10-year goal of electronic health records for US citizens. The vision for a nursing future, which bridges the quality chasm with information technology, focused on seven critical, interdependent components and three phases. [3]

In 2007, the Alliance for Nursing Informatics (ANI) became the contributing organization for the TIGER Initiative Phase II Activities. [3] Phase III is a request for leaders, organization and nurses to take action in following crucial areas:

  • Standards and Interoperability
  • National Health IT Agenda
  • Informatics Competencies
  • Education and Faculty Development
  • Staff Development
  • Usability and Clinical Application Design
  • Virtual Demonstration Center
  • Leadership Development
  • Consumer Empowerment and Personal Health Records

In 2009, TIGER moved forward to integrate the full set of recommendations from the reports of the nine collaborative teams into the nursing community along with professionals from disciplines across the continuum of care. [4]
