Dr. Curtis retired from VHA on 12/31/2014 from the position of clinician informaticist in Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS), Health Informatics (HI), Office of Informatics and Analytics (OIA). He was involved in multiple workgroups and projects in clinical informatics, and had longstanding interests in clinical decision support and clinical information systems as a whole. At the time of his retirement, he was VHA’s Lead Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Clinical Decision Support (CDS) and Feature Owner for CDS in VistA Evolution, and served as VHA’s representative to the HL7 CDS workgroup. Dr. Curtis maintained for 20 years a part-time practice in the Women Veterans Health Center at the Jamaica Plain campus of the Boston Healthcare System.

Past positions in VA included: Interagency liaison for Health Information Technology Sharing between the Veterans Health Administration (DVA/VHA) and the Indian Health Service (DHHS/IHS), focusing on sustainable collaboration between the two agencies (6/2004 to 12/2015); Director of Clinical Informatics for VHA's New England Healthcare Network (4/1998 to 6/2004); Chief Information Systems Architect for VHA (7/1996 to 4/1998); Chair of the VHA Clinical Application Requirements Group (7/1994 to 7/1996).

Dr. Curtis received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Case-Western Reserve University [1969] and his MD [1979] and PhD (in Management Information Systems; focus on group decision support) [1994] from the University of Arizona. Dr. Curtis joined the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in 1994 after 22 years as a Commissioned Officer in the U. S. Public Health Service, the last 15 as a primary care physician and clinical software developer with the Indian Health Service (IHS), where he also led VA-IHS liaison on Health IT Sharing.
