The Novella EMR system is unique in the fact that it is the first system of its kind in India which has a fully integrated document management system to tackle the vexatious problem of digitizing old paper-based clinical records which most Hospitals have accumulated over the years.

The developing world currently faces a series of health crises that threaten the lives of millions of people.

Many of the worst-affected developing countries lack resources and robust healthcare infrastructures. India, with high potentials and promises in the medical market, has scarce IT implementations. The requirements, priorities and local constraints of the market are not well understood. Also, very little research has been done regarding the same. Therefore, I have added this article on Novella EMR systems, one of the firsts of its kind in India, hoping that some of the readers might get interested in drilling more into the Indian Health IT market.

It was first implemented at 450 bedded Dr.Balabhai Nanavati Hospital, Mumbai in the mid 90s. Since then, 21st Century Novella HMS has been successfully implemented at many medium to large general and specialty hospitals such as Holy Spirit Hospital, Nanavati Heart Institute, Holy Family Heart Institute, Karuna Hospital, St Elizabeth Hospital, Smt S R Mehta and Sir Kikabhai Cardiac Institute to name a few. The total capacity of these hospitals would be approximately 1700 beds.

The current version of 21st Century Novella HMS has eight main modules: OPD, IPD, Stores, Financials, Lab Systems, Support Systems, HR and EMRD. It has over 18 sub-modules like Pharmacy, Kitchen, Diet, Laundry, Blood Bank, Maintenance, Duty Roster, Bed Reservation, Payroll and Personnel, etc.
