Dr. Middleton’s work is focused on clinical informatics – the applied science surrounding design, implementation, and evaluation of clinical information systems in complex environments. Prior work has focused on developing and evaluating a framework for a service oriented architecture for healthcare information technologies as an essential component of a broad-based strategy for clinical decision support, and quality assessment and improvement. His work has focused on building an advanced informatics infrastructure to support translational research, and permit the development and implementation of knowledge-based tools for cloud-based clinical decision support (provider and patient), knowledge engineering, population management, and provide support for technology assessment and comparative effectiveness research.
