QualityProject Thrombolytics for MI
Scope of problem
Timeliness of administration of ‘clot-busting’ drugs in heart attack can save lives, yet time to administration may be too long. 1.1 million people have heart attacks, or myocardial infarctions each year in the US. Two lives per 1000 are lost per hour of delay, so reducing to ½ hour could save thousands of lives.
Recommendation: Mean time to thrombolysis should be < 30 minutes from hospital arrival for heart attack patients.
Setting: Emergency Department
Aims: To improve heart attack treatment for patients entering the emergency department.
Specific Goal: Mean time to thrombolysis < 30 minutes from hospital arrival for heart attack patients in next 6 months.
Process and Prioritization
Process Affected : Arrival in Emergency Department to Administration of Thrombolytic
Measure(s) : Time from arrival in Emergency Department to Administration of Thrombolytic
Create semi-automated paging system when ECG shows sign of heart attack.
Implement for 1 month in ED.
Measure time to thrombolytic.
Implement permanently if works.
