I am writing to invite you to an upcoming forum that will explore the opportunities for an open source health information exchange initiative. The forum will be held Friday, November 10, 2006 in Washington DC and will bring together developers and users of open source solutions, commercial software developers and system integrators, regional health information organizations, foundations, and leading health information technology experts. The Open Source Forum project is being underwritten with joint support from the California HealthCare Foundation and the University of Louisville with support from Manatt Health Solutions. The California HealthCare Foundation engaged Forrester Research in 2005 to research this field and they concluded that there is a great deal of enthusiasm for an open source solution for regional health information exchange. As background, a copy of the Forrester Research’s “Open Source Software: A Primer for Health Care Leaders” is available online at http://www.chcf.org/topics/view.cfm?itemID=119091. In light of the success of open source solutions in other areas of the information technology market, we are optimistic about the potential of an open source health information exchange. A critical crucial component of this project is to develop a better understanding of how and to what extent open source solutions can play a role in health information exchange. We are particularly interested in your opinion and guidance on how to proceed. If you are interested in more details, the agenda and registration information for the November 10th event are online at http://openhii.visplex.net/Agenda.htm. The event will be held at the Kaiser Family Foundation Building from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Hotel accommodations can be made at the Grand Hyatt Washington DC. If you are unable to attend the November 10 event in Washington DC, we are holding a companion forum in San Francisco on Wednesday, November 15. Registration details and the agenda for the San Francisco forum are available at http://www.calrhio.org/?cridx=14
